The journey

A five-day luxury itinerary around Kanyakumari

Kanyakumari is where the subcontinent runs out of land. For three centuries this coast belonged to Travancore, and its kings ruled from a palace of teak a short drive inland.

This circuit is built around that history and paced for people who would rather see four things properly than ten in a hurry. A chauffeur meets you at Thiruvananthapuram. A licensed guide joins you for the palace and temple days, and an architectural historian or epigraphist can take the guide's place on request. The first ferry takes you to the rock before the crowds, and the afternoons are left open.

A word on luxury. Kanyakumari itself has no five-star hotel; the best rooms in town are good upscale sea-facing ones. The comfort here comes from private transport, good timing and a guide, and the plan ends with an optional two nights at a cliff-top resort in Kovalam.

Itinerary

Five days, day by day

Start on a Tuesday or a Wednesday. That keeps the palace day off a Monday, when both palaces are closed. Times are suggestions; the ferry and the temples set the rhythm.

The sun setting into the sea beyond a rocky shoreline, waves rolling in blue and orange light.

Arrival and Land's End

Thiruvananthapuram to Kanyakumari · about 90 km

  1. Late morning

    Met at Thiruvananthapuram airport (TRV)

Your chauffeur meets you at arrivals in a Mercedes E-Class or a Toyota Innova Hycross. The inland road via Neyyattinkara and Marthandam takes two to three hours depending on traffic. Arriving by rail instead? The Vande Bharat from Chennai Egmore reaches Nagercoil Junction, about 20 km from Kanyakumari, in the early afternoon.

  2. Early afternoon

    Check in, sea side

Ask for a sea-facing room on an upper floor. From there you see the rock memorial and the statue, and the sun comes up over the water.

  3. Late afternoon

    Vattakottai Fort

A small, circular Travancore-era coastal fort a short drive north-east of town. Walk the granite ramparts with the sea on one side and the last hills of the Western Ghats on the other.

  4. Sunset

    The western shore

Watch the sun go down from the Sunset Point side of town, then walk back past the Triveni Sangam ghats, where the three waters are said to meet.

  5. Evening

    Dinner with a view

The Ocean, the top-floor restaurant at The Seashore Hotel, is the one dining room in town with a proper sea view.

Check opening hours. Vattakottai is open in daylight hours only, and some listings say it closes on Fridays. Your driver will call ahead.

The Rock and the Temple

Sunrise · ferry · glass bridge · darshan

  1. Before six

    Sunrise at land's end

Watch from your balcony, or walk down to the shore below the Kumari Amman temple, where people gather before dawn.

  2. 07:45

    Poompuhar ferry to the rock

The state-run Poompuhar Shipping Corporation ferries leave from the town jetty from about 08:00. Be at the front of the queue, or book online through the district's link. Ferries stop when the sea is rough or the water is too low.

  3. Morning

    Vivekananda Rock Memorial

Built on the rock where Swami Vivekananda meditated in 1892. Leave your shoes at the entrance and keep quiet in the Dhyana Mandapam, the meditation hall. You can take photographs outside, but not in the hall.

  4. Morning

    Across the glass bridge

Since 30 December 2024 a 77-metre bridge with a glass walkway has joined the memorial to the Thiruvalluvar Statue. Statue and pedestal together rise 133 feet, one foot for each chapter of the Thirukkural.

  5. Late morning

    Kumari Amman Temple

The shore temple to the virgin goddess who gave the town its name. Darshan pauses at about 12:30. Men remove their shirts in the inner precinct, and photography is not allowed inside.

  6. Midday

    Gandhi Mandapam

Gandhi's ashes were kept here for public viewing in 1948 before they were immersed. The building is designed so that sunlight falls on that spot each year on 2 October, his birthday.

  7. Afternoon

    At leisure

Rest through the afternoon heat. In the evening, take a slow walk through the bazaar to the shore.

About an hour's drive through paddy fields and coconut groves to the old royal capital.

Be there when the gates open, with a private guide. This was the Travancore capital until the court moved to Thiruvananthapuram in the late 18th century. Its oldest parts date to the late 16th century, and it is among the largest wooden palaces in Asia, built of teak, rosewood and jackfruit wood. The palace stands in Tamil Nadu but is maintained by the Government of Kerala.

  3. Midday

    A banana-leaf lunch

Have a traditional vegetarian meal on the way. Ask your guide which family-run place is serving best that week.

  4. Early afternoon

    Thirparappu Falls

A wide, low fall on the Kodayar river beside an old Shiva temple, at its best after the monsoon.

  5. Afternoon

  6. Optional

    Chitharal Jain monuments

Rock-cut Jain carvings on a granite hilltop near Marthandam, reached by a short uphill walk. Add it if the group has the energy.

Not on a Monday. Padmanabhapuram is open 09:00–12:30 and 14:00–16:30 and closes on Mondays. Entry is ₹50 for Indian adults and ₹500 for foreign adults (official site, checked November 2026).

Temple Town and the Coast

Suchindram · Sothavilai · Muttom

  1. 07:00

    Thanumalayan Temple, Suchindram

  2. Late morning

    Sothavilai beach

A long, quiet beach west of town. Come for a walk, and ask locally before you swim.

  3. Lunch

    The day's catch

Seafood from the fishing villages on this coast, cooked the Nanjil Nadu way.

  4. Afternoon

    Muttom

Dark rocks, gold sand and the Muttom Point lighthouse, run by the Directorate of Lighthouses and Lightships, which opens to visitors in the afternoon.

  5. On the way back

    Snacks from Vadasery

The road back passes Nagercoil, where the district's snacks are made: Nendran banana chips, kai murukku, pakoda and halwa. Kumari Snacks, the online shop of RajaGopal Sweet Stall in Vadasery, packs them in sealed pouches and ships across Tamil Nadu, so you can order ahead or send a box home.

  6. Evening

    A private dinner

Ask your hotel to set a table on the terrace for your last night in Kanyakumari.

The gopuram of Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple lit gold at night above the dark rooftops of the old fort.

Towards the Capital

    Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple

Only Hindus may enter. Others can see the seven-tiered gopuram from the temple tank. The dress code is strict: men wear a mundu with no shirt, and women wear a saree, a set-mundu or a long skirt. You can rent clothes from shops at the gate. Phones are not allowed inside.

  3. Late morning

    Kuthiramalika Palace Museum

The palace of Maharaja Swathi Thirunal, the composer-king, beside the temple. Its name comes from the 122 carved wooden horses that hold up the eaves. Closed on Mondays.

  4. Afternoon

Depart, or go on to Kovalam

The airport is a short drive from East Fort. Or carry on to the coast for two nights at The Leela Kovalam, about 25 minutes from the airport.

Experiences

What stays with you

The arched glass bridge spanning the water between the Vivekananda Rock Memorial and the Thiruvalluvar Statue.

Day II

Walking on water

The bow-arched glass bridge between the two islands opened at the end of 2024. Cross it early, before the day's ferries fill it.

The granite Thiruvalluvar Statue standing on its pedestal on a small rocky island under a clear blue sky.

Day II

A poet in granite

V. Ganapati Sthapati's statue of the Tamil poet-saint was unveiled on 1 January 2000. The figure is 95 feet tall and stands on a 38-foot pedestal.

The long Mathur aqueduct carried on tall slender piers above a dense canopy of coconut palms.

Day III

Above the canopy

From the top of the Mathur trough the valley spreads out in green below you. Bring a hat, as there is no shade.

Thirparappu Falls spilling in a broad white curtain over a dark rock shelf.

Day III

The Kodayar falls

Thirparappu is a broad, gentle fall rather than a dramatic plunge, and it is busiest at weekends. Come on a weekday afternoon.

A traditional sadya laid out on a banana leaf: rice, pappadam, curries, pickles and payasam in small cups.

Days III and V

Lunch on a leaf

Kanyakumari sits between two food traditions, the Kerala sadya and the cooking of Tamil Nanjil Nadu. Eat with your right hand and fold the leaf towards you when you have finished.
